TOOL of the TRADE news

In the news:

FCP. Avid. Adobe. Windows. Autodesk.

FYI, the big software makers are feeling the heat of the now official recession. However tough times call for even tougher business moves. The latest:

Avid feeling the pressure, we hear, might be lowering prices and start selling some of it software at Best Buy. From what i know you can already buy Pro tools at Best Buy. What was once the secret powerful software that editors and sound designers used, is now open to 15 year old kids with rich parents or gran gran wanting to make your embarrassing family trip to the grand canyon next summers blockbuster, somehow the future looks annoying.

The successor to Final Cut is rumored to be out 2009, the speculative improvement will be a spiffier HI (it's not an apple if it's not pretty) but that's, what people have been waiting for is how exactly will "Snow Leopards" (the new Apple OS) impact FCP (and for that matter the rest of apples software line up) with its new "Grand Central". Apple says the Snow Leopard will have full support of true 64 bit multi-processor computing. Meaning? Insane speeds he likes of which we haven't seen in any consumer based PC and the ability to support massive amounts or RAM (a theoretical limit of 16 TB..... 16TB!!!!!!!!!).

That brings me to Windows 7. To be honest, im nowhere nearly as excited about Windows 7 as i am for Snow Leopard, and i have never owned a Mac. From what i hear Windows 7 will be vista, but just not crappy. Which is a bummer because i was hoping for some cool new stuff. If windows doesn't step up their game (by a lot) i will be one of the many windows user who will switch to apple, after being won over with apples Grand station technology, and even now more solid OS.

Autodesk has bought Softimage (yes that means XSI), which has been leaving people with mixed feelings, personally I'm against monopolistic companies. I like to have a choice of which products i buy, if i don't like Autodesk, then im screwed because most of the major 3D apps are owned by Autodesk. All i hope is that The leave softimage alone and allow it to function and evolve by it's self, since it's been doing such a great job so far.

That leaves Cinema 4D up for grabs, i guess, and I feel that Adobe should jump in and snatch Cinema 4D before Autodesk takes that too. Adobe still lacks in the 3D department so we can only speculate as to whether or not they will fill the gap, and if so, how.
